Local adaptation, phenotypic plasticity, and species coexistence

چکیده

Understanding the mechanisms of species coexistence has always been a fundamental topic in ecology. Classical theory predicts that interspecific competition may select for traits stabilize niche differences, although recent work shows this is not strictly necessary. Here we ask whether adaptive phenotypic plasticity could allow (i.e., some stability at an equilibrium point) without ecological differentiation habitat use. We used individual-based stochastic simulations defining landscape composed spatially uncorrelated or autocorrelated environmental patches, where two with same competitive strategies, able to coexist form plasticity, expanded their ranges absence competition-colonization trade-off (a well-studied mechanism diversity). Each patch characterized by random value determines optimal phenotype its occupants. In such scenario, only local adaptation and gene flow (migration) interact promote genetic variation metapopulation. Results show competitively inferior can superior, non-plastic species, provided migration rates variances patches' values are sufficiently large.

Ecological opportunity and phenotypic plasticity interact to promote character displacement and species coexistence.

We investigated the roles of resource availability and phenotypic plasticity in promoting ecological character displacement (i.e., trait evolution stemming from resource competition between species). Because ecological character displacement generates new populations that differ in resource use, this process should only occur when exploitable resources are available. We tested this hypothesis i...

Invasion strategies in clonal aquatic plants: are phenotypic differences caused by phenotypic plasticity or local adaptation?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The successful spread of invasive plants in new environments is often linked to multiple introductions and a diverse gene pool that facilitates local adaptation to variable environmental conditions. For clonal plants, however, phenotypic plasticity may be equally important. Here the primary adaptive strategy in three non-native, clonally reproducing macrophytes (Egeria densa...

The effects of phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation on forecasts of species range shifts under climate change.

Species are the unit of analysis in many global change and conservation biology studies; however, species are not uniform entities but are composed of different, sometimes locally adapted, populations differing in plasticity. We examined how intraspecific variation in thermal niches and phenotypic plasticity will affect species distributions in a warming climate. We first developed a conceptual...

Evidence of concurrent local adaptation and high phenotypic plasticity in a polar microeukaryote.

Here we investigated whether there is evidence of local adaptation in strains of an ancestrally marine dinoflagellate to the lacustrine environment they now inhabit (optimal genotypes) and/or if they have evolved phenotypic plasticity (a range of phenotypes). Eleven strains of Polarella glacialis were isolated and cultured from three different environments: the polar seas, a hyposaline and a hy...

Adaptive phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation for temperature tolerance in freshwater zooplankton.

Many organisms have geographical distributions extending from the tropics to near polar regions or can experience up to 30°C temperature variation within the lifespan of an individual. Two forms of evolutionary adaptation to such wide ranges in ambient temperatures are frequently discussed: local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity. The freshwater planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna, whose ran...
